Like eight precious gems that gleam by the banks of th tranquill rivers that flow by them, the Astha Vinayaka temples together make one of the Maharashtra’s most holy and dearly loved pilgrimages. As devotees on thie Yatra, we travel into a rural countryside, and return ruch with manu experiences, some scenic, others spiritual. And even as we journeys to have his darshan, Vinayaka is always with us. What better time to be in his presence than Ganesh Chaturthi?

The Astha (Eight) Vinayaka temples are at Moregaon, Siddhatek, Pali, Madh, Theur, Lentadri, Ozar and Ranjangaon. All eight temples are within a radius of 110 KM around Pune. According to legend, the Astha Vinayaka Darshan has to be performed in a certain order, in accordance with the chronological occurence of Swayambhu idols. In all these temples, Bhadrapada Shuddha Chaturthi (Early Sep), Magha Shuddha Chaturthi (Early Feb), Viajayadashmi (Early to Mid Oct) and Somavati Amavasya (On Monday) are celebrated on a grand scale. The Ashta Vinayaka Darshan can be done from Pune as well as Mumbai from various travel agents.

Continued ..

Ticketvala would be covering series of pilgrimage yatras and share his experience with his users. The gods command our devotion all year around, but some of greatest indian pilgrimages take place in July, August, and September. Here we present seven such journeys in the following posts –

1. First in the series – Kailash Mansarovar Yatra – It’s freezing cold as you gaze upon the summit on fire. And marvel as your heart’s desire comes true. The sight of mansarovar and mount kailash, the holiest lake and mountain in the world, shimmering on Tibet;s barkha plain, sacred to hindus, Budhists, and Bonpos. Thsi entire region is a living shrine and one of the greatest and hardest of all earthly pilgrimages. Long before modern nation-states came to in to being, the most reputed and resolute pilgrims aspired to complete this unparalleled pilgrimage, the path to moksha. Then chances were that yatra would be one way, due to the ardous mountain trek and cold. If the pilgrim didn’t return after a two year period, he was presumed to have ascended to Vaikunth, the ultimate destination, fulfilling his holy journey.

Things are much easier now. The ministry of External Affairs (www.meaindia.nic.in), Government of India, organises the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a 26 day roud trip from Delhi, between June and September each year. The age old route to Tibet is over the Indian Himalaya via the Lipu Lekh pass, on the Indo=Tibet border in Uttarakhand. Accomplished with excellent logistic support and in reasonable comfort, the yatri is feted by the Government of India and its agencies. To join the Yatra, explore yathra.

To be continued…

For two days, before my husband’s birthday, I wondered where to take him. This was probably the rarest birthday that was on a weekend. I asked myself a simple question, what animate thing he loves the most, and his words resounded in my ears, ‘Earth would have been extinct because of human sins, if it wouldn’t have been for animals’. Bingo! There was my answer, the Bannerghatta National Park Bangalore. Situated 22 kms south of Bangalore, it is about an hour and a half’s drive from the city. This hilly place is home to one of the richest natural zoological reserve in India.

The national park is spread out in a vast area. It has been divided into:

The Zoo

The zoo is like a treasure house of exotic species of wildlife and a great mélange of flora. The cages have been designed in a way that they look like replicas of the animal’s natural habitat, which creates a lot of interests in the visitors. It has a tall list of animals and includes elephants, gaur, leopard, jackal, fox, wild pig, sloth bear, sambar, chital, spotted deer, langur, macaque, porcupine, wild boar, pangolin, slender loris, huge lizards, cobras, pythons, kraits, Russel vipers and a large variety of beautiful birds as recherché as a white peacock.

There is an elephant ride for the visitors by the Forest Department. The zoo has an Aquarium and a theatre too. The theatre features documentaries. The one we saw was on tigers. Attached to the theatre is a museum that showcases zoological exhibits.

The Butterfly Museum

This is the country’s first butterfly museum. It has a conservatory, museum and an audio-visual room. It is a circular enclosure where a living environment has been designed to support over twenty species of butterflies. They flutter around you, enticing you to appreciate their beauty.

Safari

The area is dry deciduous forest. This safari is conducted in KSTDC buses. But rest assured. They are no ordinary buses. They are like cages on wheels. All the windows have iron bars on them with a small square for your cameras. The safari area is divided into carnivore section and herbivore section. But the tickets are sold in the name of Grand Safari and Tiger and Lion Safari. In the Grand safari, you can see all the animals from deer to bears, monkeys, tigers, lions, crocodiles. While in the latter, you would be taken only where the tigers and lions are.

A hortatory advice-beat the heat and go early. If it is too hot, you would not only feel exhausted yourself but the animals would also not come out. The national park, this includes the safari area as well as the zoo area, is a plastic free zone.

It seems futile to describe The Grand Canyon in words. But I will give it a try. The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge in the state of Arizona in USA. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first national parks in USA. It is nature’s more laborious job, carved over a period of six million years by the Colorado River. The canyon is 446km long, its width ranges from 6.4 to 29 km and drops to about 6000 feet.

The canyon is divided into two rims-the North Rim and the South Rim. Individual interests, available time and the weather can influence your visit. Plan, plan and plan…planning is very essential when visiting Grand Canyon, because, as the name suggests, it is ‘Grand’. So grand that it cannot be covered in a single day.

We visited the South Rim. If you do not have much time and plan on going to South Rim, walk a short distance down the Bright Angel or South Kaibab Trails, keeping in mind that it is much easier to go down than climb back up. Drive on Desert View Drive; stop at Tusayan Museum and the Desert View Watchtower.

Services and accommodations are available. There is even a RV park with all the facilities. Some viewpoints also have snack and souvenir shops. Keep yourself stuffed and hydrated, especially if you are hiking.

There are various ways that one can see the Canyon. There are airplane and helicopter packages available. But if you are as faint hearted as I am when your flying, then beware; the ride has a lot of ups and dives. See the land through Hummer or water through white water rafting. If you have the stamina, go for hiking or biking. Overnight camping needs a permit.

But the best way to see the canyon is to use the free shuttle, even if you have your own vehicle. It has three main routes – The Village Route, Hermit Rest and Kaibab Trail Route.

When we came back from seeing the Canyon, we went to see the one time railway track. Maybe they still use it. Although, the most striking thing that we found there were not the rails but the deer. They were approximately ten in number and moved about as if they are used to human population proximity. These days it is a highly endangered bird. Spotting it at the Grand Canyon is also one of the canyon’s many activities.

Sit and watch the changing play of light and shadows. Watch the way colours change from reds to purples during different times of the day and the orange hues when the sun sets. Wander along a trail and feel the sunshine and wind on your face and watch the clouds cast changing shadows on the plateaus and pinnacles. And do not forget to get a bird’s eye view of the Brahmaputra temple among the canyon peaks. Grand Canyon has a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful.

On a Saturday morning, I wish, I could use the word ‘bright’, but we started in the dim-lit morning at about 5 am, for Masinagudi, so as to not waste our day. We were about ten friends and were quite perplexed as, what to expect. Everyone had heard the name Bandipur but no one knew about Masinagudi, except for a friend, at home, who suggested the place. Masinagudi is a beautiful place in the foothills of Nilgiris. The place is lush green, peaceful and adventurous at the same time with a lot of trekking, hiking and safari options available for all. After a picturesque drive of about 250kms from Bangalore we reached Masinagudi in about 5 hours.

The way to Masinagudi is another experience in itself. We went through the Bandipur wildlife sanctuary. It is also called Madumalai Wildlife Sanctuary (the name changes when you cross into Tamil Nadu). Masinagudi is on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border. Nature has lavishly bestowed this sanctuary with flora and fauna. This is the habitat for varied species. There is a wide road that took us from the sanctuary to our Masinagudi resort. We went slowly to take in the view of the animals up close, and not to scare or anger them. We could see the deer, horses and peacocks, here and there and could even spot a few elephants.

Safari Land Resort is an eco friendly resort in the heart of Bandipur sanctuary, on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border. The resort takes up safaris twice a day. It is one of the best activities to get involved in. One is at 4 am, where they take you in jeeps and you have more chances of getting an eyeful of tigers or elephants and other wildlife. We took the evening tour. Not because we preferred but because we could not get up at 4, in the morning. But nevertheless, it was a trek-safari, if I may name it so. One of the resort employees took us into the forest for a trek, moving through streams, climbing hills and moving through uneven track. Every step took us closer to the flora and wildlife. The beauty of the Blue Mountains was spell binding. We could hear the elephants at a close distance and were asked to take shelter and not make noise. We caught glimpses of many animals, from deer, wild dogs, wild boar to various birds like kingfisher, Malabar squirrel and even a huge ant hill.

The resort offers two kind of accommodations, a normal luxury room and a tree house or machaan kind of a suite. We chose the latter, for the sheer experience of it, and whoa, what an experience. A tall tree house, a hammock below it and a stream running beside it, was how our room was. The resort also offers games, such as table tennis, badminton, chess, carom, mini-bowling etc. In the night, they organize a bon fire, where snacks and drinks are served. Later there is a dinner buffet. The night was very rainy and chilly. Waking up with the chirping had been my dream. No construction thumping, no car horns and no door bells. Then a friend shouted, as a rabbit ran under our tree house followed by deer running by. Sometime later we also caught horses drinking water from the stream.

There cannot be any place closer to nature. But do check the weather conditions, too rainy and too hot, makes the animals also uncomfortable and your safari would be futile; and pack some warm quilts, just in case.
